By the turn of the twentieth century, Cleveland’s fire department had developed into an organization professional in its appearance, attitude and performance. Courtesy of Cleveland Public Library, Photograph Collection.

Nine Red Jackets faced attempted murder charges, but key witnesses failed to show up for the trial. Lacking positive identification, the court discharged all of the defendants. Many volunteer companies refused to fight fires if the Red Jacket Company continued in operation; the Cleveland City Council consequently disbanded the group. In protest, members of the dissolved company paraded through the streets of Cleveland, hanging the Cleveland fire chief in effigy as they passed his residence. In 1862, Cleveland initiated a transition from volunteers to paid firefighters. Within two years, the colorful era of volunteer groups had passed into history.
